Sausage and Waffles Grilled Cheese Sandwich

April 14, 2012 by Bake Up, Little Suzy

In honor of National Grilled Cheese Month, I’m posting a different grilled cheese sandwich every single day through the month of April. You’re welcome.

This sandwich was a great idea. I mean, who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner? Sausage links and waffles with maple syrup – this sandwich had everything going for it. Until I actually made it.

It turned out, um, odd. The combination of syrup and cream cheese tasted weird, almost curdled. And the waffles never crisped up – they got a little soggy. Based on this experiment, I think I’m going to abandon the chicken and waffles grilled cheese sandwich idea. Sorry, the South.

YUM. Waffles make a great PBJ and i used to buy the ones that had a syrupy filling – Waff-Fulls, I think they were called. This looks good – I need to spring these on my kids soon.

I know this is old, but I figured I’d give some input..

I did basically the same thing, with three exceptions..

I used frozen waffles (obviously easiest) but I actually toasted them brown and crisp first. No butter or anything..

Straight to a skillet with cream cheese..

NO SYRUP. Maple sausage patties.. They fit on the waffles almost perfectly (I bought the bag of them at Wal Mart).

They actually turned out quite nicely, though I will say the warm cream cheese is a little awkward.

If you were going to do this from buttering the outsides and toasted, I’d suggest a panini press.
